GINGIVECTOMies

Some individuals may have a “gummy” smile because the teeth appear short. Actually, the teeth may be the proper lengths, but they are covered with too much gum tissue. To correct this, your periodontist performs a Gingivectomy or a Dental Crown Lengthening procedure.

Gingivectomy is surgical removal of gum tissue, or gingiva. This procedure is used to treat conditions like gingivitis or for cosmetic purposes to modify a smile. Your dentist may recommend gingivectomy if you have excess gum tissue or require treatment for severe gingivitis. The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. Most patient do not require any stitches.

Dental crown lengthening is a procedure where excess gum and bone is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This Procedure can be performed for multiple teeth or a single tooth to even your gum line, or to expose a natural, broad smile. Your periodontist may also recommend dental crown lengthening to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible. Crown lengthening may be needed to adjust the gum and bone to expose more of the tooth so it can be restored.
